Released in 1998 on No Fashion Records (distributed through Metal Blade), “Vobiscum Satanas” is the fourth album in the discography of this near legendary band. Multiple lineup and label changes throughout their history has done little to dampen the spirit of what Dark Funeral does, and does very well. This album is another testimony to the power generated when Thrash and Black unite. Countless plays later; I can honestly say that I never tire of listening to it.
Consisting of eight tracks with a total playing time of just over 35 minutes, “Vobiscum Satanas” is true representation of everything Dark Funeral ever was, and (hopefully) ever will be, which is brutal and thrashing true Black Metal. Each track is an explosive barrage of hateful energy, with slashing riffs sharp enough to pierce even the darkest armor. The drumming is an intense assault of undeniable energy and force, with blistering speed its signature throughout. And as always, Dark Funeral avoids the technological pitfalls that can trip up a band and cause it to lose focus (such as thick keys, sound effects, etc). Dark Funeral is a cornerstone in all that is dark and evil, and they have my respect.
Unfortunately, I have oft found this band (and this album specifically) to be maligned by the “it’s cool to hate Dark Funeral” club. I challenge everyone who bows to peer pressure, stand on your own feet. Listen to and absorb this music, and judge it based not on the opinions of your friends, but on the music itself. You may find that you enjoy the music, and need different friends…
