Canadian Assault - Dec 01 2002

Amazingly, I have gone to a Metal gig that Gary did not attend! He has a new job and his xmas party conflicted with the concert. In these uncertain economical times, he felt it better to show up and play the corporate game rather than see a concert. Donovan decided to go play hockey. But Jon and I had our priorities straight, and were well rewarded for our loyalty.

The trip to Montreal was pretty cool, we made very good time and got there an hour early. The gig was a CD release party for a compilation of Canadian bands. There were two bands from Montreal, one from Quebec City, and one from Toronto.

The band I went to see played first. Souls Of Darkness are a Black Metal band from Quebec City, and I first saw them when they were an opening band for Amon Amarth. I talked to the bassist a bit before they went on, as I have seen him attend other gigs and he's a very cool guy. And I'll tell you, he is one big dude, very grim and mean looking. The kind of guy who hits you now and you find out about it later after you wake up. I've always respect that kind of thing. Anyways, they only got to play 4 songs, which was disappointing and disrespectful since they had to drive a very long time to get to the gig, but they seemed happy to have another chance to play in Montreal. I may have to take the massive journey to Quebec City someday if I find they are playing there.

Next up was Blood Of Christ, a collection of geeks playing badly executed chaotic Technical Death Metal. Once again, I am faced with the eternal question... why do musicians who display such obvious talent choose to play such horrid music? I'll probably take that question, unanswered, with me to my end. Suffice to say I will NOT be looking for a Toronto gig with BoC.

Next up was a local Metal/Punk favorite Ghoulunatics. I don't like them, but I will say they had an energetic show, with a good stage presence and really made an effort to involve the crowd. 15 years ago I would have liked this band. But, it's not 15 years ago.

Last up was the mighty Necronomicon. Necronomicon is the oldest band in Montreal right now, having survived the 90's intact and have not compromised their melodic Death Metal styling to please anyone but themselves. It's funny to see the lead singer/guitarist before he goes onstage, he looks like your average guy with glasses and a pony tail who might be "sightseeing" at a gig. But before he goes on stage he transforms into the vision of evil, and all he does to do this is take off his glasses and untie his hair.

Necronomicon played an excellent set and 2 encores, the first one obviously being the compulsory encore that is required of any headlining band. But the 2nd encore was totally by crowd demand. I think that was really cool. They only played one song, but it was for US.

Overall, it was an awesome gig. I don't like the drive home and 2 hours of sleep before going back to work the next day, but you know.... it's a small sacrifice when compared to the power and glory of seeing good live Metal.
